Fatty Liver Disease/NAFL (Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver)

Fatty liver disease is a rather common condition nowadays. It’s known via its scientific name hepatic steatosis. Fatty liver is a build up of fat in the liver that’s excessive. It’s ok to have a bit of fat in the liver, but too much can end up being a problem. Not a lot of people know this, but the liver is the second largest organ in your body and it’s crucial for processing nutrients found in food and drinks. It also filters harmful substances. If you have fatty liver disease, you will deal with inflammation and that can lead to scarring.

You already have questions and don’t worry. You’ll find a lot of answers in this post and as always, I urge you to do a little homework yourself. Hopefully,  you are not dealing with this thing right now, but if you or are just want to be in the know, I’ve got some good info for you here! So first things first. Like anything, how do you know if you may have it?

The Western Diet and Fatty Liver Disease

Usually the main factor is obesity. As you start gaining weight, you are bound to start dealing with health problems and that’s definitely something that you want to address as fast as possible. Aside from obesity, some of the other causes are: insulin resistance, high blood sugar levels and so on. There are also things like

  • rapid weight loss,
  • hepatitis C,
  • medication side effects or exposure to various toxins.

Too much alcohol can lead to fatty liver disease

Usually, fatty liver disease appears when you have an unhealthy diet. If you don’t eat adequately or you eat randomly and the diet is not very healthy, you are bound to deal with health issues. This is a very important aspect to keep in mind. And with the right approach this will be worth dealing with. Please check with your health care provider if you have even the slightest suspicion things aren’t quite right.  As I always say, nothing in this blog is ever meant to contradict or supersede the advice of your own health care team.

How Do You Treat Fatty Liver?

Once again, I hope you don’t have it. I’d like nothing more than for this post to be irrelevant to you and your sphere of influence. If however, fatty liver is something you have, I would suggest addressing the basics first.

  • Limit the alcohol consumption
  • Eat healthier
  • If you’re overweight, make weight loss a priority.

The faster you do that, the better it will be. It’s crucial to understand what leads to these problems because the faster you handle this, the better the results will be. Just try to take your time and be committed to weight loss, and it will be worth it. I know for Jarrod and I, Keto has been effective. We have both lost a lot of weight and become healthier in the process. If it isn’t Keto that “floats your boat,” find something that does – or once again consult your doctor.

Love Your Liver

In addition to eliminating or cutting back on some things that aren’t very kind to your liver, I would urge you to do things that show your liver some love. Consume more foods like:

  • broccoli
  • apples
  • fermented foods
  • walnuts

All of these foods are very good at keeping the liver clean. Also, beets help activate bile and liver enzymes to breakdown fats. This is a crucial function of the liver!
